Chia seeds have come a long way since the beginning of their existence. Chia seeds originally come from a plant that is part of the mint family, also referred to as Salvia hispanica. This plant is found in parts of south Mexico, South America, and Central America.
These seeds have been used in foods, and have a history that expands clear back to 2,600 B.C. Its main use was by Mexicans and for many centuries this amazing little seed became a food for Indians in Mexico and the southwestern US. They once earned the name “running food” and it once was said that Aztec warriors would eat these Chia seeds during conquests. These seeds were once one of the four most popular crops amongst Aztecs and the Mayans. Once Mexico was conquered, Spaniards put a halt to growing Chia seeds as they once played a huge role in certain ceremonies.
Nowadays, it’s said that these small seeds, typically no more than 1mm in diameter, are used for medicine properties and nutritional value. Mixing a spoonful of seeds with water for 30 minutes eventually leads to looking like gelatin. In addition, these seeds have high contents of oil and have become the richest source of vegetables as it is high in Omega-3. The body needs these oils and Chia seeds are free of cholesterol.
Chia vs. Salba
There has been a lot of discussion as to whether or not Salba and Chia seeds are similar. Salba actually is a form of Chia seed that is white and nutritionally consistent. It’s grown in South America and is in actuality a far more premium form of Chia seeds.
Salba seeds are larger in size and also are consistent in color, shape, and size. Perhaps the biggest thing that sets these two apart from one another is the regulations and growing process. Both seeds pose great health benefits to the body, and Chia seeds offer a nutty flavor great for smoothies or even oatmeal. Salba can be ground or eaten whole.
Salba, too, is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids and offers more than Chia seeds. Salba also offers high percentages of antioxidants, calcium, magnesium and folate similar to Chia. Salba is an effective product for replenishing the body’s minerals that are used in contractions of the muscles and that is lost by sweating.
Salba offers higher nutritional value than Chia seeds, but both are beneficial to the body. Chia seeds help to slow down the absorption of carbohydrates in the body as well as sugars. It also allows you to feel fuller longer. These seeds help soothe heartburn and calm your stomach, too.
These amazing little seeds pose huge advantages when consumed regularly. It’s no wonder many people are adding these power seeds to their diets!
