Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine method where one puts pressure on the acupressure points. It is similar to acupuncture but instead of placing needles on the acupuncture points, pressure is applied. The therapist uses his or her hands, elbows and additional devices when necessary. Acupressure had been tested clinically and evidence proves that it does have amazing effects. Though the Traditional Chinese Medicine and the scientific medicine don’t see eye to eye, research still suggest that there are acupressure points that has distinctive effects that couldn’t have been predicted by the use of anatomical explanation.
The acupressure points trigger parts of the body that aren’t necessarily on the same area as where the points can be found. Like for example, an acupressure point found at the sole of the feet would relieve the stress of the head or arm. In the traditional Chinese medicine, the balance of the Yin, Yang and Qi is important thus through the principle of the meridian system were they able to come up with such points that focus on a certain part of the body. Acupressure points are used for health and self-defense. These points can be attacked by an opponent to incapacitate his or her enemy. Fighters of martial arts also massage their own acupressure points to help relieve of such blockages so they could perform better by having better circulation and increased flexibility.
The theory of acupressure is similar to acupuncture. According to the traditional Chinese medicine, our body has 14 primary channels or meridians. Pressure or needles are placed along these 14 channels. In the 14 meridians, there are over 400 acupoints with specific organs or system distinction. A patient may be suffering from nausea and would request for acupressure or acupuncture and the pressure or needle would be applied on the wrist to relieve the patient of nausea.
So, why is it that putting pressure or placing a needle on these acupoints helps rid of diseases and illnesses? Traditional Chinese believe that our body has a natural healing response and therefore it can heal itself only if we help it through stimulation of its system. Although there is no physical evidence of the existence of these acupoints, scientists could not disregard the fact that acupuncture or acupressure truly are effective. They are considered as protoscience that had been practiced long before the scientific methods were formulated. Up to this day, acupressure and acupuncture are widely used today. Patients who were not healed by modern medicine can get healing through regular acupressure or acupuncture sessions.
There are instruments being used for acupressure and these can be bought and used by the patient. Acupressure mat, acu ball, foot roller, power mat, energy roller and other instruments help in stimulating the acupoints in our body. Foot rollers, for instance, is used by placing it on the floor and the patient puts his foot on top of it and rolls it back and forth. It would feel uncomfortable at first but eventually the soles of the feet would get used to the protuberances and your body will feel the results.
