Their proportion is responsible for determining the temperament of person, that is, which element is dominating the others and vice-versa.

According to oriental medicine, the ideal condition in which a person is in optimum health is when all five elements are in harmony with each other and are balanced. Wood is considered to be the fire’s mother, whereas it is the water’s son. Based on these relationships, all the possible imbalance of yin and yang can be described. When there is an imbalance in the elements, acupuncture is used to treat the problem by isolating the imbalanced element since it can reduce the strength of the body, spirit and mind.
